Maximum Breathlessness Test - Measure your breath-hold capacity during movement
What is the MBT?
The Maximum Breathlessness Test (MBT) measures your ability to hold your breath while walking. It complements the BOLT score by assessing your hypoxic tolerance during movement.
BOLT Score
Measures comfortable breath-hold time at rest. Indicates baseline CO2 tolerance.
MBT Score
Measures breath-hold capacity during movement. Shows functional fitness level.
How to Perform the Test
- 1
Walk at a normal pace
Find a flat area where you can walk comfortably for at least 100 paces.

Take a normal breath in and out
Breathe gently through your nose. Do not take a deep breath.

Pinch your nose and hold your breath
Continue walking while holding your breath.

Count your paces
Count each step until you feel a strong urge to breathe.
- 5
Resume nasal breathing
When you must breathe, release and breathe through your nose. Your first breath should be calm.
Safety Precautions
- Do NOT perform this test if you are pregnant, unwell, or have been advised against breath-holding
- Stop immediately if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or experience any discomfort
- Do not push to the point of significant distress
- Perform in a safe environment away from traffic or hazards
- Have someone nearby if this is your first time
